Create a new well

Softdrill NL

When creating a new well by selecting [New well...] from the main menu or the well's context menu, the following dialog box will appear:

Well name

Input the well name.  This is a required field.

Operator

Input the operator for the well.  This is a required field.

Well / job number

For reference, a well number or job number may be assigned to the well.  This can be any format.  This field may be left blank.

Report time

Report time for daily drilling reports.  Typically this will be 00:00, meaning the daily operations are entered from 00:00 to 24:00.

Once data is entered for this well, the report time can no longer be changed! To change the report time, the entire well will have to be re-created.

Typically well reports should run from 00:00 - 24:00.  Selecting a different report time may cause with administrative systems that normally work on the basis of calendar days. To report per calendar day whilst still presenting the latest operational update, operations for the next calendar days that started before 06:00 may (optionally) be printed with the Daily Drilling Report.

Wellpath description

A wellpath is a section of the wellbore between two specific measured depths.  It is a container for data specific to this wellbore section (e.g. formation tops, directional surveys, drilling parameters, etc.).  Each well should have at least one wellpath, but additional wellpaths may be added as required.  The Description is the name used for the wellpath.  Typically, the first wellpath is named 'Original wellbore' (normally starting at 0.00 ft/m) and subsequent wellpaths are named 'Sidetrack 1', 'Sidetrack 2' etc.  However, names may be freely chosen to suit requirements.

Wellpath rank

Rank is a number to provide a means to sort the wellpath in the order in which they were drilled. This is provided because sorting by Description (Name) or Start Depth may not be correct. Names require no specific format (so that sorting would be random) and a specific sidetrack may be initiated above (at a shallower depth) the previous sidetrack.  Therefore the 'Original wellbore' is typically 1 and sidetracks subsequently 1, 2, 3, etc.

Wellpath start depth

Depth at which the sidetrack was initiated (kick off point).  For the 'Original wellbore' this should be 0.00.
