Activity log

Softdrill NL

Time from

Start time for the activity (operation).  The end time (Time To) and Hours are calculated with the Daily Report. Note that the end time is assumed to be the Report Time for the well (typically 00:00) unless another activity follows.  In that case the start time (Time From) of that activity will be used as the end time.

Phase

Phase of the well to which the activity applies.  To ensure correct summaries, a Phase should be assigned to all activities.

Activity code

Determines the type of activity.  This code is used in a variety of calculations and should be assigned with care in order to ensure correct calculation results.

Specifically assignment of codes in Groups 100 (Drilling), 200 (Circulating) and 300 (Reaming) should be applied with care as this could potentially lead to incorrect tool hours on BHA reports and Mud Motor tickets that may also be used for administrative (invoicing) purposes.

Additional Activity Codes may be defined in Lookup Data Maintenance, but this should be done with great care and (preferably) only after consultation with Softdrill NL.

Because a BHA can only be used on one particular wellpath, some special codes for handling open hole sidetracks are provided.  An open hole sidetrack in this context is a sidetrack where no cement plug is set and the BHA is not pulled out of hole before actually sidetracking. In this case a new BHA must be generated (this can be quickly done using the Copy Tally option) and codes 420, 430 and 431 must be used to label activities and provide the correct In Hole and Out of Hole markers.

Class and Root Cause

The Class field is provided for performance tracking (KPI's).  The 6 available values and the use of the Root Cause field are explained in Event Types and Root Causes.

BHA

Reference to the BHA in use during this activity.  The BHA does not necessarily have to be 'in hole'.  For example, activities for making up, laying down the BHA should also be labeled accordingly.

Note that there are 4 important Activity Codes that should be applied consciously in order to correctly calculate date-time in/out and depth in/out for the BHA.  Doing this incorrectly will also affect calculation of further BHA summary data (surveys, drilling parameters, formations, etc.).

Code 401 - Make up BHA (= BHA IN) is used as a marker for Date-Time In and Depth In for a BHA, whereas code 404 - Pull out of hole (= BHA OUT) is used to determine Date-Time Out and Depth Out.  For code 401 the Time From field is used and for code 404 the Time To field is used. As there may be multiple activity records describing picking up and laying down the BHA, codes 400 and 403 are also available and should be correctly applied.  Ultimately the time at which the bit was run below or pulled above the rotary table should be taken as the time in and out.

A typical example is given here below:

Time From

Time To

Operation

Activity Code

End Depth

14:00

15:15

PU stabilizers and mud motor.  MU and rack back same

400

2,500

15:15

15:45

MU bit and align motor to MWD (scribe line)

400

2,500

15:45

17:15

RIH BHA to HWDP

401

2,500

02:00

04:30

Pump out of hole to shoe

200

3,200

04:30

12:30

Pump slug and POOH to BHA

403

3,200

12:30

14:00

POOH with BHA.  Back off bit.

404

3,200

14:00

15:45

LD stabilizer and mud motor

405

...

From the above table it can be seen that the Time In was 15:45 and the Depth In 2,500m. The Time Out and Depth Out were 14:00 and 3,200m respectively. Applying code 401 to either of the operations at 14:00 or 15:15 or the 404 code to the operations at 02:00, 04:30 or 14:00 would have given incorrect results.

MD End

The end depth (MD End) should always reflect the actual depth of the hole at the end of the activity, not the depth of the bit or any other depth.

If a hole is plugged back (i.e. with cement) this should still reflect the ultimate drilled depth, not the top of the cement plug.  If, for example, a hole is drilled to 2,500m and then plugged back to sidetrack at 1,500m the activities should have the following depths assigned:

Operation

End Depth

Comment

Drill to 2,500m

2,500

Previous wellbore

POOH and rack back motor BHA

2,500

PU cement stinger and set cement plug to 1,400m

2,500

POOH and LD cement stinger

2,500

PU and RIH with motor BHA

2,500

Dress cement from 1,401 to 1,500m

2,500

Still in previous wellbore

Time drill and sidetrack to 1,511m

1,511

Actual start of the sidetrack

Drill ahead to 1,622m

1,622

Also worth noting here is that the activity 'Dress cement from 1,401 to 1,500m' should have Activity Code 320 - Drill / Dress Off Cement and not code 100 - Drilling because there's no new formation being drilled (the previous wellbore is being cleaned from cement).

Comments

Description of the activity.  The Activity Code and Description (e.g. '100 - Drilling') will be printed on the Daily Report, so this can be rather brief.

Drilling parameters do not have to be entered for drilling operations (Activity Group 100-199) as they are printed on the Daily Drilling Report for the BHA's in use and the Depth In/Out range for the report.  Parameters for reaming operations, drilling cement, etc. (Activity Group 300-399) are not listed in the Drilling Parameters and should therefore be described in the activity comments for future reference.

Total hours

Sum of the hours for all activities for the day.  Provided as a check for correct input and should amount to 24.00.

Maximum depth reached

Maximum (not end) depth reached for the current day.
