Lessons learned are a powerful and valuable tool to improve performance on future projects. It provides an overview of issues that were encountered whilst drilling the well which may help improve performance on future wells.
Lessons learned may be positive as well as negative. I.e. whilst specific problems (poor bit performance, inability to build angle in a specific formation, etc.) should be described, it is also useful to highlight things that went well as this may also help to plan future wells (e.g. good bit or BHA performance).

Lesson identification |

Provide a sequential Issue Number to sort the Lessons Learned and a Category to sort, group or filter the lessons by. Categories may be freely chosen, but for correct sorting and filtering it is important to use consistent naming (case-sensitive). |

Lesson references |

|
These fields may be used to optionally reference a wellpath, BHA or daily report for the lesson. For example, if a specific bit type did not perform well in relation to a specific formation, it would make sense to reference the BHA and the wellpath it was used on. All three fields consist of a drop-down box that are populated from existing data (e.g. a BHA must exist in the database in order for it to appear in the drop-down list). |

Lesson narratives |
|
|
Three fields are provided to describe the lesson learned and to suggest possible improvements. The Description field is used for a brief (to the point) description of the issue. Further details or circumstances for the issue should be described in the Comments field. Suggestions to prevent the issue from re-occurring or to improve on a future well, may be input in the Solution field. The Comments and Solution fields are so-called memo fields and have no input length restriction. The [Enter] key may be used to start a new line. |
