For consistent data input, which is important when performing data analysis of database searches, company names are restricted to values provided in a drop-down list.  This list is populated from the Company lookup table, where applicable filtered for the Company Type.  The Company Type is one of three values:

 

1.Operator. Operator of the well.

2.Contractor. Drilling contractor (rig owner).

3.Service. Third-party company providing a specific service (e.g. directional drilling, MWD/LWD, drilling fluids, mud logging, etc.).

 

A good example is the General tab on the Well form.  On this tab, there are two fields requiring input of a Company Name: Operator and Contractor.  The drop-down list in the Operator field will only be populated with Company Names that have Company Type 'Operator'.  The drop-down list for Contractor (under rig information) will only be populated with Company Names with Company Type 'Contractor'.
